See it in action

Watch six fresh coconuts go through Grandma Ann's Electric Grater, from the white coconut meat to a bowl of freshly grated coconut.

The machine grates the coconut meat. Making coconut milk or cream is a separate step afterward: the grated coconut is soaked, then squeezed or strained the way your recipe calls for.

Choose your texture

The right blade depends on the recipe. Every grater comes with the Regular Blade; add the Fine Blade only if your recipes call for a finer coconut texture.

Regular Grating Blade for the Electric Grater

Included with the machine

Regular Grating Blade

Versatile grated texture

The stainless-steel blade that comes with every Grandma Ann's Electric Grater. It gives a versatile grated texture and works for fresh coconut when that texture suits your recipe.

Fine Grating Blade, an optional accessory for the Electric Grater

Optional · sold separately

Fine Grating Blade

Finer, softer texture

Produces a finer, softer texture than the Regular Blade. It is our recommended blade for finely grated fresh coconut, for uses such as coconut milk, coconut cream, candies, breads and desserts. It is not included with the machine.

Not sure? Start with the included Regular Blade. You can add the Fine Blade later if you want a finer result.

From fresh coconut to family favorites

Freshly grated coconut is where many traditional recipes begin. Grandma Ann's handles the grating; what happens next is your family's recipe.

Coconut milk and cream

Coconut milk and cream are made after grating: the grated coconut is soaked in water, then squeezed through a cloth or strainer. Many cooks keep the first, richest pressing as cream. Every family has its own method.

Breads and candies

In the Caribbean

Coconut bread, coconut drops and Trinidad and Tobago's sugar cake, plus Puerto Rican tembleque and arroz con dulce, made with fresh coconut milk.

In the Philippines

Bibingka, maja blanca and kakanin such as suman, made with grated coconut or fresh coconut milk.

Cakes and traditional desserts

Cassava cake, coconut cakes, macaroons and puddings start with fresh coconut or its milk. Choose the blade for the texture each recipe needs.

Simple preparation

The same steps as every ingredient, with one rule for coconut: only the white coconut meat goes into the machine.

  1. Remove the hard shell

Open the coconut and separate the white meat from the hard shell. Never put shell into the machine.

  2. Prepare the coconut meat

Cut the coconut meat into pieces that fit the hopper.

  3. Assemble it correctly

Install the blade, then bolt the hopper securely in place. The grater operates only when the hopper is properly installed.

  4. Start empty and use the pusher

Turn the grater on with an empty hopper, then feed the pieces and press them down with the supplied pusher. As one piece gets low, stack the next on top: that is Stack and Push.

  5. Keep hands out

Never reach into the hopper or toward the drum with fingers or utensils. The pusher stops just above the drum for safety, so a small final piece can remain. That is normal.

  6. Clean up

Switch off and unplug the grater before taking it apart. The removable bowl, grating blade and hopper are dishwasher-safe. Wipe down the motor base; never immerse it. Between large batches, pause and let the motor cool.

More than coconut

The same machine grates yuca, green bananas, potatoes, horseradish and hard cheese. Blade choice varies by ingredient and the texture you want. For cassava masa, use the Regular Blade, not the Fine Blade.

Coconut questions

Can Grandma Ann's grate fresh coconut?

Yes. Separate the white coconut meat from the hard shell, cut it into pieces that fit the hopper, and grate it with the Regular Blade that comes with the machine or with the optional Fine Blade.

Which blade should I choose?

It depends on the recipe. The included Regular Blade gives a versatile grated texture. The optional Fine Blade gives a finer, softer texture and is our recommendation for finely grated coconut, for example for coconut milk, cream, candies and desserts.

Is the Fine Blade included?

No. Every grater includes one Regular Grating Blade. The Fine Grating Blade is an optional accessory, sold separately.

Does it extract coconut milk?

No. Grandma Ann's grates the coconut meat. To make milk or cream, you soak the grated coconut and squeeze or strain it afterward, following your recipe. The machine does not blend, juice or slice.

How should I prepare coconut meat?

Separate the meat from the hard shell, never put shell into the machine, and cut the meat into pieces that fit the hopper. Start the grater with an empty hopper and feed the pieces with the supplied pusher.

Can it also grate cassava?

Yes. It grates yuca (cassava) too. Use the Regular Blade for cassava masa and traditional recipes; the Fine Blade can make cassava softer or finer than they require. See the yuca grating guide.

How do I clean it?

Switch it off and unplug it, then remove the bowl, grating blade and hopper. Those parts are dishwasher-safe. Wipe down the motor base and never immerse it.

Which voltage do I need?

Choose 110–120V for the USA (including Puerto Rico) and Canada, or 220–240V for countries on 220–240V power; the international model has an EU plug. Both are the same machine. Before a 220–240V grater goes into your cart, you are asked to confirm your voltage.
